Meet a few of our doulas:
Lizzie Jekanowski trained with BADP in 2015 and is a member of the Leadership Circle and Salon Series Team. Ever since birthing lambs as a child on her mother's sheep farm, Lizzie has prioritized working within the spectrum of reproductive experiences. She was a vocal reproductive justice activist at Boston College, has provided direct service as a medical assistant with Planned Parenthood Mar Monte, and volunteered as a rape crisis counselor. In addition to loudly talking about her love for burritos, Lizzie enjoys creating print art under her moniker The Funny Feminist, dying her hair many colors, and taking long walks on the beach with her cat Bowie.
Lauren Macdonald has been a member of BADP since 2015 and is a member of the BADP Leadership Circle, and Social Media Team. She has trained as a birth, abortion, and postpartum doula. She has experience working with folks birthing and post partum through San Francisco General Hospital doula program and work with private clients. Lauren is passionate about health justice and reproductive justice work. Lauren has been studying herbal medicine since 2014. By day Lauren works as a registered nurse in HIV and public health. With many passions, she tries to align them and support people in finding balance and connection in life.
Scarlett McIntosh found her reproductive justice coven alongside her time attending UC Berkeley. She trained as a birth doula in 2012 and volunteered in a maternity hospital based in Cape Town, South Africa. With stronger awareness of the reproductive violence against multiply-marginalized folks she joined ACCESS and trained as an abortion doula with BADP in 2015. She is a member of the Leadership Circle, Salon Series Team, and Social Media Team. She is en route to apply for Certified Nurse Midwifery programs and hopes to start a Reproductive Justice Co-op in the near future. In her spare time she loves napping, throwing pottery, lounging by Lake Merritt, reading social justice scifi, playing Dominion, talking about neurodiversity, advocating cooperative economics, and going to punk shows.
Amber Avalos lives in Richmond CA, she is an Artist/Activist/Teacher and mother to a 6 year old girl. Amber has been providing practical support with ACCESS since 2012. In 2014 Amber joined with BADP as an Abortion Doula and a member of the Training Team and Leadership Circle. She looks forward to continuing that support with people in her community.
Jenna Gaarde has been a member of BADP since training to be an abortion doula in January 2015. She is a member of BADP's Leadership Circle and training team, providing information and resources to those interested in becoming abortion doulas. She is passionate about adolescent health and reproductive justice, and spends her days working in the field of public health. In her free time, she likes to craft, watch terrible reality tv, and enjoy the beauty of the Bay Area.
Barby Zeldovich has long been committed to honoring and empowering women around their sexuality and reproductive lives, and has pursed these goals through art, advocacy and activism, basic science, and direct healthcare work. She completed her PhD in placental biology and the infectious causes of preterm labor, and spent several years volunteering in direct service as a health educator at the Women’s Community Clinic and Lyon-Martin Health Services. Barby is currently pursuing her MD at the UCSF School of Medicine in hopes of becoming a full-spectrum reproductive healthcare clinician. Additionally, she is on the Board of Directors at ACCESS and a member of the feminist screen-printing collective ArtBison. Aside from science and reproductive justice, she loves kale, her broken bike, and gluing pieces of paper to other pieces of paper.
